r/shopify rules: what actually gets removed

Each rule below is paired with the way it is most likely enforced. Where the rules state a number, we quote it. Where they do not, we say so instead of guessing.

  1. 1.All Posts must be related to Shopify Exclusively

    Enforcement varies

All posts must be directly and exclusively related to the Shopify Platform - no posts with issues that may pertain to ecom stores in general. Dropship-related posts should be made to relevant groups like r/dropship or r/dropshipping. If you have a specific issue with a Shopify seller, this is not the place for that; Shopify is not a marketplace like Amazon; buy at your own risk.

  2. 2.No Store or App Reviews / Feedback

    Enforcement varies

All store reviews must be posted to r/reviewmyshopify unless part of an AMA / approved review thread.

  3. 3.No Success Stories / Guides / How-To / Blogspam / AI

    Enforcement varies

No unsolicited AMA (ask me anything) posts, success stories, 'how I made' posts, expert guides, blogs, 'top' lists, I analyzed 5,000 stores..., case studies, 'what we learned' etc. Longform posts that are clear blogspam, suspected AI (in the view of a moderator) or reported as such may be removed.

  4. 4.Soliciting, Promotion, or Direct Soliciting via DM

    Enforcement varies

This should be self-evident. This is a place to exchange helpful information freely, as posts that stay up will help others in the future. This is not the place to promote yourself or services to the members here. Violations and attempts to circumvent this rule by "recommending someone" inviting private solicitation via DM or request for DM will result in a ban. This also includes 'offers to help' (even if free), or 'looking for help' posts or comments.

  5. 5.Store, Course, or Illegal Theme Resale

    Enforcement varies

If you attempt to resell or freely offer paid themes or courses that you didn't create or have resale rights, you will be issued an instant and permanent ban. You will not be warned, you will not be told to stop, you will be banned instantly. Store sales are also not permitted to due to our inability to protect buyers from scams. Likewise, posts looking for 'how to sell my store' will not be allowed.

  6. 6.No spamming or links to external content.

    Enforcement varies

The sharing of any links, be it in a YouTube description or otherwise is not allowed. Content marketing via blog articles will not be allowed. Please avoid links for signup for Shopify as well as for apps and external courses.

  7. 7.We are all grown ups (well, most of us...).

    Enforcement varies

Abuse and racism is not accepted. Please report any posts or comments. Please do not use this if you simply disagree with the poster.

  8. 8.No 'Dev Research' or App Developer posts

    Enforcement varies

Posts looking for 'pain points' of store owners, beta testing, app reviews, app validation ideas, or other posts that are looking for ideas or feedback on apps or app / software ideas are not allowed.

  9. 9.Account Requirements

    Enforced automatically

Our minimum account age requirement is 30 days, and our minimum karma requirement is 20 'comment' karma AND 20 'post' karma (these are different than your overall karma). Your post or comment will be auto-removed if you do not meet these requirements, and moderators will not respond to requests to waive these requirements.

  10. 10.No AI or Suspected AI Slop

    Enforcement varies

Obvious or suspected AI content is not welcome here in any form. Violations from lower-karma accounts with little contribution history in this sub may result in a ban. This will be at the sole discretion of the group moderators.

  11. 11.No 3PL Related Posts

    Enforcement varies

There are plenty of other groups for 3PL-related posts; this sub has been inundated with them. This will not be the place for 3PL discussion.

What gets removed in r/shopify

  • Self-promotion

r/shopify bans self-promo outright. Product links, launch posts, and thinly framed "feedback" posts are removed.

  • Account below the stated minimum

The rules state you need a 30-day-old account. Below that, removal is automatic and silent.

  • AI-generated content

r/shopify removes content it judges to be AI-generated. Obvious AI phrasing in a draft raises removal risk even when a human wrote most of it.

  • Reddit's sitewide spam filter

A separate layer before the subreddit ever sees your post. New accounts posting links, URL shorteners, and repeated domains are its favorite targets. Removals are instant and silent.

  • A shadowbanned account

If the account itself is shadowbanned, every post looks live to you and invisible to everyone else, in any subreddit.

r/shopify posting questions

Can I post links in r/shopify?

No. r/shopify accepts text posts only, so a link-only submission is rejected at the door. You can usually mention a link inside the body text, but the sub's rules on self-promotion still apply to it. Check your draft against the rules before posting.

Does r/shopify require karma to post?

The rules state an account-age minimum of 30 days but no public karma number. Many subreddits this size also run unpublished karma filters, so a brand-new account may still see posts silently removed. Comment first, post later.

Can you self-promote in r/shopify?

No. r/shopify bans self-promotion outright: product links, launch posts, and thinly framed feedback posts get removed. The sub's own wording: "This is not the place to promote yourself or services to the members here. Violations and attempts to circumvent this rule will result in a ". Is r/shopify strict?

Moderate, by our estimate (36/100 on our strictness scale, from its measured removal rate, 11 rules, and its stated gates). About 2% of recent posts disappeared within a day in our sample. Strictness is about enforcement, not hostility: a strict sub is predictable if you follow its rules.

Does r/shopify allow AI-generated content?

No. r/shopify removes content it judges to be AI-generated. That includes obviously AI-phrased text even when a human edited it, so rewrite drafts in your own voice before posting here.

What is the best time to post in r/shopify?

Based on our sample of recent and top posts, activity and scores peak around Saturday 12pm UTC and Wednesday 10pm UTC. Treat this as a starting point, not a guarantee: a post that breaks a rule gets removed at any hour. The heatmap on this page converts these windows to your local time.

Why do posts get removed in r/shopify?

The most common reasons are self-promotion violations, plus the layers every subreddit has: Reddit's sitewide spam filter, unpublished AutoMod rules, and account-level gates like karma and age. In our recent sample, roughly 2% of r/shopify posts disappeared within about a day of going up. Many removals are silent, so checking your draft first beats finding out after.
