Estimated survival rate

96%

of 800 recent r/videos posts we sampled were still publicly visible about a day later.

How this is measured

Estimate. We sample recent public posts and check again about 18 hours later to count how many are still publicly visible. Posts removed at the moment of submission never become publicly visible at all, so the true removal rate is at least this high. Last sampled Sep 5, 2026.

r/videos rules: what actually gets removed

Each rule below is paired with the way it is most likely enforced. Where the rules state a number, we quote it. Where they do not, we say so instead of guessing.

  1. 1.Videos Only

    Enforcement varies

If I have to explain this to you, I'll smack you with a dead carp

  2. 2.No Personal Information or Witch-Hunting

    Enforcement varies

Or incitement to witch-hunt. No demanding "Reddit Justice" (or even regular justice) in any way in post titles or comments. Do not post names, Facebook pages, phone numbers, addresses, etc. Fake information (false@fake.com, 123 fake street, etc) also falls under this rule. This is grounds for an immediate (and likely permanent) ban, so consider this your only warning.

  3. 3.No Indirect Links

    Enforcement varies

No web pages that only embed Youtube or Vimeo videos. No URL shorteners. No links to playlists or to channel pages.

  4. 4.No Porn, Gore, or Death

    Enforcement varies

Nudity is not necessarily banned on /r/Videos, providing that the appropriate NSFW tag is used to indicate it. 'Gore' refers to any graphic display of injury, mutilation, or harm such that it is visible during the video. Includes humans and animals.

  5. 5.No Solicitation of Votes or Views

    Enforcement varies

No asking for votes or sharing submission links on or off-site. See Reddiquette for more details. Do not ask other users to follow your social media profiles in comments or submission titles. Titles for posts should not try to influence users to view or upvote them. No giveaways. Donation links and kickstarters/fundraisers must be sent to us to be verified.

  6. 6.No Hate Speech

    Enforcement varies

You are free to offer your opinion respectfully, but comments intended to demean a group, acontextual expressions of bigotry, and the pejorative use of slurs is disallowed. Baiting users into breaking this rule is not allowed. Telling other users to hurt or kill themselves in any form is against reddit TOS, and will earn you a permanent ban.

  7. 7.No Public Freakouts

    Enforcement varies

No videos of real-life, malicious person-on-person assault/battery or physical abuse of animals. This includes raw videos of fights, police brutality/harassment, and malicious violence. This includes videos of child and animal abuse. Public freakout videos belong in /r/PublicFreakout.

  8. 8.No Third Party Licensing

    Enforcement varies

No videos that are licensed by a third party or are attempting to seek third party licensing. If the video description says: 'for licensing enquiries contact licensing@agency.com', the video is most likely licensed by a third party. If the video has a watermark, it also may be licensed by a third party. Videos that become licensed after they are posted will be removed.

  9. 9.No Self-Promotion / OC

    Enforcement varies

We are currently not allowing any self-promotional content. r/Videos is not a platform for you to promote your own channel or one you're associated with.

  10. 10.No Low-Effort AI-Generated Content

    Enforcement varies

    Please see full description [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/wiki/rules)

r/videos does not publish karma or account-age minimums in its rules. Subreddits often enforce unpublished filters on top of what they write down, which is why posts from new accounts can vanish without a message here.

Can you self-promote in r/videos?

No. r/videos bans self-promotion outright: product links, launch posts, and thinly framed feedback posts get removed. The sub's own wording: "We are currently not allowing any self-promotional content. r/Videos is not a platform for you to promote your own channel or one you're ass". If you want eyes on your project, contribute first and look for communities with a promo lane.

What gets removed in r/videos

  • Self-promotion

r/videos bans self-promo outright. Product links, launch posts, and thinly framed "feedback" posts are removed.

  • Low karma or a new account

r/videos publishes no karma or age minimum, but unpublished account filters are common at this size. New accounts should comment before posting.

  • AI-generated content

r/videos removes content it judges to be AI-generated. Obvious AI phrasing in a draft raises removal risk even when a human wrote most of it.

  • Reddit's sitewide spam filter

A separate layer before the subreddit ever sees your post. New accounts posting links, URL shorteners, and repeated domains are its favorite targets. Removals are instant and silent.

  • A shadowbanned account

If the account itself is shadowbanned, every post looks live to you and invisible to everyone else, in any subreddit.

r/videos posting questions

Can I post links in r/videos?

Yes. r/videos accepts link posts. The usual sitewide traps still apply: URL shorteners, affiliate parameters, and brand-new domains get filtered fast, and promotional links are judged against the sub's self-promo rules. One clean link to the original source is the safe pattern.

Does r/videos require karma to post?

r/videos does not publish a karma minimum. That does not mean there is none: many subreddits enforce unpublished karma and account-age filters that remove posts silently. If your account is new or has little karma, that is the first thing to rule out when a post disappears.

Is r/videos strict?

Moderate, by our estimate (32/100 on our strictness scale, from its measured removal rate, 10 rules, and its stated gates). About 4% of recent posts disappeared within a day in our sample. Strictness is about enforcement, not hostility: a strict sub is predictable if you follow its rules.

Does r/videos allow AI-generated content?

No. r/videos removes content it judges to be AI-generated. That includes obviously AI-phrased text even when a human edited it, so rewrite drafts in your own voice before posting here.

What is the best time to post in r/videos?

Based on our sample of recent and top posts, activity and scores peak around Tuesday 3pm UTC and Tuesday 6pm UTC. Treat this as a starting point, not a guarantee: a post that breaks a rule gets removed at any hour. The heatmap on this page converts these windows to your local time.

Why do posts get removed in r/videos?

The most common reasons are self-promotion violations, plus the layers every subreddit has: Reddit's sitewide spam filter, unpublished AutoMod rules, and account-level gates like karma and age. In our recent sample, roughly 4% of r/videos posts disappeared within about a day of going up. Many removals are silent, so checking your draft first beats finding out after.
